Zagreb – a city where the seasons transform its character in the most enchanting ways. When I arrived, summer was gently fading, leaving behind warm breezes that made exploring its cobbled streets a delight. The golden autumn followed, painting the city in hues of amber and crimson, while crisp mornings turned into cozy evenings. Now, as winter sets in, the city feels magical, with festive lights, bustling Christmas markets, and a chill that calls for steaming cups of coffee in charming cafes. This picturesque backdrop has been my home for the past five months as I embarked on the Erasmus Mundus Master in Entrepreneurship (EMMIE) Program. Reflecting on this journey, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the lessons, friendships, and experiences that have defined my time here.
A Memorable Startup Competition
One of the most defining highlights of my time in Zagreb was the startup competition organized by Eureka International Group and the Zagreb School of Economics and Management (ZSEM). I presented my innovation in the marine economy – a project focused on turning seafood waste into bio ingredients. This initiative aims to address sustainability challenges while empowering women fish traders in Kenya. As the only African team competing among a diverse group of participants from Europe to China, the experience was both exhilarating and humbling.
I was the last to present that day, and I still remember my peers from EMMIE cheering me on with words like, “You can do it!” Their presence in the audience gave me the strength and confidence to deliver my pitch with passion. The moment I was awarded 3rd place on Growth in Entrepreneurship and Innovation remains unforgettable. It was more than a personal triumph. It symbolized the strength and collaborative spirit of EMMIE Generation 3 and our entire program. It truly felt like a celebration for what we stand for: collaboration, resilience and innovation.
This award is particularly significant to me because it validates the work I’ve been doing with fish farmers and fish traders back in Kenya. It serves as a reminder that our efforts to improve livelihoods through sustainable practices matter and are recognized on a global stage. The competition taught me many lessons – from the importance of clear communication to the value of believing in your vision – and these lessons will continue to shape my entrepreneurial journey.
Youth in Aquaculture: A collaboration to Remember
Another defining moment of this mobility program was working with Sydney Badiola. A fellow EMMIE participant and COO of Metamorphosis Group, to implement the Youth in Aquaculture Program. Together, coached 15 young people on career development, blending practical skills with guidance on career readiness through a holistic approach. Seeing their growth and enthusiasm was deeply fulfilling.
This project reminded me of the power of mentorship and teamwork. Sydney and I brought different strengths to the table, and it was amazing to see how our collaboration created something impactful. It’s moments like this that make me grateful for the EMMIE program and the diverse perspectives it brings.
Growing through EMMIE
The EMMIE curriculum has been nothing short of transformative. The coursework at ZSEM was rigorous and thought provoking, deepening my understanding of impact entrepreneurship and sustainable innovation. But what made this experience even richer were the hands-on opportunities, like group projects, simulations, and the startup competition.
Being surrounded by classmates from all over the world has broadened my perspective in ways I couldn’t have imagined. Their stories and ideas have challenged me to think differently and have made me a better problem solver.
Celebrating Cultural Diversity
Zagreb’s charm and warmth made it easy to feel at home. From exploring its historic streets to participating in local traditions, every experience was a change to learn and grow. But what truly stood out was the camaraderie within our cohort.
We celebrated cultural diversity through group activities, birthday celebrations, sharing food from our countries, dinner nights and a heartfelt Thanksgiving dinner. These gatherings created a strong sense of community and belonging. They highlighted the value of cultural sensitivity, collaboration and understanding. I’ll forever cherish the friendships and memories made during this time.
A Supportive Community
The EMMIE community has been a source of strength and inspiration. Whether it’s brainstorming for a project, sharing a meal, or offering a word of encouragement, my cohort has been there every step of the way. This sense of belonging made the challenges of academic and entrepreneurial pursuits much more manageable.
Festive Season: Reflecting with Gratitude
As the year winds down, it’s the perfect time to reflect on everything I’ve learned and the people who’ve made this journey so special. I’m deeply grateful for the Erasmus Mundus program, ZSEM, and my mentors and peers who have supported me along the way.
The festive season is also time to look ahead. The lessons and memories from Zagreb will serve as a strong foundation for the next phase of my journey in Lithuania. I’m excited to keep building on these experiences, to set new goals, and to embrace the opportunities waiting for me.
Looking Ahead: Lithuania and Beyond
As I prepare for Lithuania, I’m filled with anticipation. This next mobility promises new challenges, opportunities, and adventures. I’m eager to explore Lithuania’s entrepreneurial landscape, dive deeper into my studies, and continue collaborating with my peers.
I’m also looking forward to experiencing Lithuanian culture and traditions, adding yet another later to this already rich journey.
Closing Thoughts
These past five months in Zagreb have been a whirlwind of growth, collaboration, and discovery. From the startup competition to the Youth In Aquaculture Program, and from academic achievements to the bonds I’ve formed with my cohort, every moment has been impactful.
As I bid farewell to Zagreb in January, I carry with me immense gratitude and optimism for the future. The EMMIE program has exceeded my expectations, and I’m excited to see what the next chapter holds.
