1. Transportation
Vilnius boasts a well-connected public transportation system that is both affordable and efficient. As an EMMIE student, you’ll receive an ISIC card during your first week, which entitles you to an 80% discount on fixed-period bus tickets. With your ISIC card, you can purchase discounted bus tickets, making commuting around the city budget-friendly.
For convenience, download the Trafi app on your phone. It allows you to buy bus tickets and get real-time updates on bus schedules. Buses are frequent and reliable, but remember to always have a valid ticket. Controllers are common, and fines for riding without a ticket are hefty.
If you prefer a quicker and eco-friendly way to get around, consider using electric scooters and bikes, which are available through various apps.
2. Mobile Connectivity
Staying connected is crucial. Buy a Pyldik.lt SIM card from a local supermarket for around 4.50 €. Using your ISIC card, you can get a student plan for approximately 10 € per month, which includes unlimited internet, calls, and messages. Lithuania has some of the fastest internet speeds in Europe, so staying connected won’t be an issue.
3. Groceries
It’s essential to stock up on groceries. For affordable options, head to IKI and Maxima. These supermarkets are spread all over Vilnius, with Maxima offering a wider variety of products, making it ideal for your first big shopping trip. Both supermarkets offer discount cards that can help you save money over time.

4. Health and Wellbeing
The winter months in Vilnius can be tough due to the lack of sunlight, so it’s important to take care of your health. Start taking Vitamin D supplements to combat the lack of sunlight. Symptoms of deficiency include depression, anxiety, and fatigue, and it’s something many students experience. Ensuring you get enough Vitamin D will help you stay healthy and maintain your energy levels.
5. Additional Tips
During your immersion week, you’ll also receive an ISN card. This card offers various discounts, including 10% off on four one-way flights per academic year with Ryanair – perfect for those weekend getaways.
For affordable clothing and household items, visit Humana, a chain of second-hand shops scattered throughout Vilnius.
Keep in mind that Vilnius is slightly more expensive than Zagreb, so budget accordingly for eating out, social activities, and groceries.
6. Embracing Vilnius
Vilnius is a city full of green spaces and parks, making it a lovely place to explore. While it might be a bit gloomy during the winter months, the city comes alive in the spring and summer, offering an entirely different atmosphere with a vibrant and lively vibe. By taking advantage of the student discounts, staying on top of your health, and exploring the city’s numerous attractions and events, you’ll have a fulfilling and enjoyable semester. Welcome to Vilnius, and enjoy your time here as an EMMIE student!
PRO TIP: The last Sunday of every month, the city offers free admission to all it’s museums.
