The event commenced with UK Deputy Ambassador Helen Walker-Fleming’s opening remarks, which were not only informative but also infused with a sense of urgency for technological advancement. The emphasis on AI, Quantum Computing, and Bioengineering highlighted the UK’s position as a frontier in tech innovation. The presence of embassy officials such as Mr. Thomas Mead and Ms. Diana Nimac added a tangible sense of commitment to these collaborative efforts. As I listened, a sense of pride and excitement stirred within me. The idea that entrepreneurs from diverse backgrounds could contribute to this technological revolution was both empowering and daunting.

Željko Riha’s transformation from a rugby enthusiast to a tech entrepreneur encapsulated the spirit of the event. His journey with BaseStone and his reflections on the British work ethic provided a realistic snapshot of the entrepreneurial ecosystem. His story deeply resonated with me, because it is great to step into a different country as a foreigner and starting business. Moreover, it  illustrates the unpredictable yet thrilling path of entrepreneurship.

Then, we got into British entrepreneur Tony Kypreos’ session which was a deep dive into the world of sustainable entrepreneurship. Kypreos’ alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and his role in the Global Entrepreneur Programme offered a masterclass in balancing business acumen with a global vision. His session was not only inspiring but also grounded in practicality, emphasizing the importance of understanding the motives and methods of entrepreneurship. Specifically, Kypreos considers not just the ‘what’ of entrepreneurship, but the ‘why’ and ‘how’.

After this, the ‘Get Started in Health Innovation’ (GSHI) presentation by Filip Stipancic followed and was particularly impactful. It wasn’t just a presentation; it was a call to action. Understanding the gaps in the health innovation ecosystem and the challenges in nurturing startup ideas was a revelation. This initiative imparted a sense of community and purpose, aligning participants with the broader goal of healthcare transformation.

A panel discussion on early-stage HealthTech startups followed the session that provided a comparative study of the Croatian and UK ecosystems. The session was an eye-opener, revealing how different yet interconnected these markets are. The experiences shared by panellists were not just stories; they were lessons in adaptability and cultural understanding.

The event also explored startup development nuances, emphasising customer discovery and the significance of international networks. These were real-world challenges that we, as budding entrepreneurs, face every day. The discussion on assembling the right team and navigating the investment landscape resonated with me. It gave me the idea about the practical insights of entrepreneurial projects and it’s benefits to the society.

Personal Takeaways and Broader Implications

What struck me most about the event was the collective ambition and determination. It was a reminder that the journey of entrepreneurship is not just about individual success, but about contributing to a larger ecosystem of innovation and progress.

The conversations I had with fellow attendees were as enlightening as the formal discussions. These informal chats over coffee breaks and networking sessions were where ideas sparked and future collaborations were hinted at. I left the event not just with new knowledge, but with a great network of individuals.
